Philosophy

Art Encounters is a camp that will give children meaningful experiences with art, allowing them to learn new techniques, discover artists, and create work that is unique and educational.  The Elements of Art and Principles of Design will always be discussed and taught. Most importantly, making art builds the Studio Habits of Mind - positive habits children can apply to many situations in their lives.

The Studio Habits of Mind

  • Developing Craft – learning to use a variety of tools and materials for artistic expression

  • Engage and Persist- working through problems or tedious tasks and stretching patience.

  • Stretch an Explore – students reach beyond their capacity and become brave and curious.

  • Envision – learning to “see” and visualize solutions.

  • Express- convey ideas and feelings through images and using artistic processes.

  • Observe- to look more closely to really "see" and record the world around you.

  • Reflect- to be self-reflective and to learn to talk about ideas and processes.

  • Understand Art Worlds – to be able to connect their experiences to the history of art or something outside of themselves.

After working closely together for many years at William Fleming High School and in the RCPS+ Summer School Program, Heather and Anette firmly believe in one thing - the students are the BEST part of being an art educator. There is nothing more satisfying than watching a student grow as they connect with a medium, find their voice through an artistic process, or advance their skills to create some truly stunning pieces. We have watched countless students move from saying "I can't do that!" to "I did that!", from "Art isn't my thing." to "Your class is my favorite class.". We believe the key to being a successful teacher is to build confidence and curiosity - to balance teaching skills while creating the opportunity for individual expression and exploration, and to develop positive relationships with the students. We believe our success is measured by the quality of the student experience.

Health & Safety

We will be implementing social distancing for this camp due to COVID-19.  Because of this, we are limiting enrollment, making sure there is 6 feet of space between each student, no sharing of supplies, all provided snacks are prepackaged, masks will be worn by instructors, and students will bring their own lunches.  At the end of each day, all surfaces will be properly disinfected.

As seasoned teachers, we can ensure that your child will be in a safe, warm, and respectful environment at all times. We will follow a strict check in and check out process that requires a signature and ID check. We will only release students to the parents listed on the registration form unless the parent provides written permission otherwise.
